Curious about the big Central Maui fire that was at least partially responsible for closing Hansen Road (along with the discovery of an errant hand grenade) yesterday? It was a compost fire, first reported on Sunday afternoon. And yeah, it’s apparently still going on, and will affect virtually all of the island for the next few days.
“Maui County fire fighters are still on the scene at the Central Maui Landfill–Refuse & Recycling Center, where a blaze at the EKO Compost site has closed down operations today and possibly tomorrow,” stated a June 3 County of Maui press release. “This means that all of Maui’s normally scheduled trash pick-up routes–with the exception of Hana–will be delayed until tomorrow. This also means that Tuesday’s usual trash-pick up routes will be pushed back until Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning.”
