So today Honolulu Civil Beat published a long profile of MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo as part of its “Making Waves” series. The story relies heavily on a lengthy interview reporter Nathan Eagle conducted with Russo last month over at Saigon Cafe in Wailuku, but also draws on chats with yours truly and Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa–who provides the story’s most colorful quotes.

Like this one, which came during a discussion of the fallout over MauiTime‘s 2009 Scariest People Issue cover that depicted then-Mayor Charmaine Tavares as a zombie:

“That guy doesn’t have it in his soul to hurt mosquitoes. He’s a wuss when it comes to physical threatening.”

The story’s a solid and balanced look at Russo, who is undeniably colorful. Of course, that’s my personal opinion–Russo himself has yet to weigh in…
