Kula Kid #9: “Baring Bum and Bone in Search of the Right Words”
If dry-heaves are happiness (stay with me), having a regular writing gig is kind of like a never-ending hangover. I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world (and have at times traded the world for the experience), but sometimes I wonder if I’m committing slow suicide whilst pained and bent over porcelain keys. Kula Kid is fledgling yet—this is only the ninth installment—but in that time, I’ve yet to write an “out on the town” piece about my (presumed) late-night exploits (a la my Holoholo Girl predecessor). Every time I sit down to do it, I can’t find the words. What to say? Do I divulge that I’m a...

Kula Kid #8: “Extraterrestrial Beans”
Hope and pray as I may, I have yet to be abducted by aliens. Most geeks might agree that being beamed up would be something of a Nerd Rapture—a blessing, probes or no. I mean really, no matter how excruciating the experiments (if that's indeed what they do) might be, the experience would totally be worth it. Heck, it'd be worth resigning myself to a life of muttering about Grays, and leaving zany messages about the cover ups and conspiracies that abound, for the editors of a local alt. weekly (OK, that doesn't really happen to us, but I'd welcome it). My biggest disappointment regarding extraterrestrials is the lack of...

The 80-page issue--the annual Best of Maui readers poll, which highlights the island’s top people, places and businesses in a number of categories--hit stands July 22. “We believe we’ve created the world’s largest 3D newspaper; we haven’t found any other publication that’s done it on this scale,” said Publisher Tommy Russo. “In that sense it was a leap of faith, but I’m proud of our team for pulling it off."
