At long last, U.S. Senate candidates Mazie Hirono and Linda Lingle will come face to face in an actual live debate. Sponsored AARP Hawaii, the debate will appear on KHON2 tonight at 7-8pm. KHON2 Reporter Gina Mangieri will moderate while University of Hawaii journalism professor Gerald Kato and former Honolulu Advertiser editorial page editor Jerry Burris will act as panelists.
Considering that the American Association of Retired Persons is hosting this thing, you can expect the debate to focus on issues near and dear to the hearts of seniors: Medicare, Social Security, Obamacare and Matlock reruns.
“We know the issue of jobs is very important to Hawaii voters age 50-plus, but any meaningful
discussion of the economy has to include the future of Social Security and Medicare–for today’s
seniors as well as their kids and grandkids,” said AARP Hawaii State Director Barbara Kim
Stanton in an Oct. 5 press release. “To these voters, ‘retirement security’ and ‘economic security’ are largely the same thing.”
