2012 MauiTime Year In Review

So much for the world not ending last week. I know. What a bummer. Can you think of a better way to fix climate change, the rise of dangerous fungi and antibiotic resistant bacteria, soul-crushing poverty, nuclear proliferation, terrorism, the ruinous drug war, Michael Bay movies, government debt, ocean acidification, avian flu, school shootings, traffic fatalities, targeted drone assassinations, Katy Perry songs, corporate crime, garbage … [Read more...]

MauiTime’s 2012 Hawaii Primary Election Endorsements

When you don’t vote, you have no voice. There’s no truer statement in a democracy. Sure, we can bitch and moan about the influence of money in political elections, or the stranglehold “special interests” have over our legislatures or even the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of most candidates, but when it comes down to it, unless we actually punch holes in a ballot, we’re just kidding ourselves. Voting requires work, effort and, above all, … [Read more...]

Woo! Vote For Shane Victorino!

So I'm driving home Friday night, listening to Johnnie A and our own associate editor Anu Yagi on K-Rock, 97.3 FM, when Johnny A says, in response to Anu mentioning that I just took over as MauiTime editor, "I remember Anthony, he's a rabid baseball fan." Now I'd just like to say now, for the record, that although I am a fan of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (stupid name, to be sure), I am not, nor have I ever been, a "rabid" fan of baseball … [Read more...]

More On the Victorino/Onion Connection…

Recently we told you about Councilmember Mike Victorino making The Onion courtesy of son Shane. It's not the first time the younger Victorino has earned a mention from "America's finest news source." In August 2009, they ran a blurb under the headline "Bat Boy Easily Holds Shane Victorino Back During Argument With Umpire." Add that to the aforementioned, "Shane Victorino's Parents Bracing For Annual Spring Training Drop-Off Tantrum" and it's … [Read more...]

Maui’s Major Leaguers: Where Will They Start the Season?

Their teams, positions and salaries vary widely, but with the arrival of Spring Training Maui’s three pro baseball players have one important thing in common: each is on a Major League roster. Last season ended in disappointment for St. Anthony grad Shane Victorino, as his Philadelphia Phillies failed in their bid for a third straight World Series appearance. Victorino, 30, did win another Gold Glove for his centerfield play—and enjoyed the … [Read more...]

Shane Victorino Wins Another Gold Glove…And Deserves It, Unlike Some

He's even better when he's actually wearing his glove. (Photo by: Googie Man)

Maui boy Shane Victorino was awarded his third straight Gold Glove yesterday, a recognition of the rock-solid outfield defense that helped his Philadelphia Philles get to the National League Championship Series (where, I am contractually obligated to mention, they lost in six games to my San Francisco Giants). Kudos to Shane; he deserved it. Too bad the Gold Gloves are, by and large, a joke. They're voted on by managers and coaches, who … [Read more...]
